This challenge is more than a savings strategy—it's a behavioral shift.
"In a world of grand gestures and daring dreams, we tend to forget the profound impact of the small, the consistent, and seemingly ordinary achievements."
“One bite at a time.”
The age-old proverb on how to eat an elephant holds a profound lesson in the power of taking small, manageable steps consistently over time to tackle even the most daunting challenges.
Just like eating an elephant one bite at a time, my savings journey started one dollar at a time. With consistency and time, dollar by dollar, I saved $100,000 in just three years. For some, this may seem like mere pocket change. However, for ordinary people like myself, a hundred thousand dollars saved in three years is a game changer.
My pursuit to save was born in tough and challenging times, while working a low paying job. Amidst financial despair, with little to my name, a series of daily savings challenges helped me escape a pit of debt and doubt.
Of the various savings challenges I attempted, the one that continues to hold the greatest value to my financial well-being is the Dollar by Dollar Savings Rule. It graduated from being a challenge to a rule the moment I realized how powerful it was. It may seem unnecessary now with a healthy savings account, but to this day, I continue to follow this rule — it’s a principle that is the foundation of my financial well-being.
"Success isn't always about achieving greatness in every single moment. It's about showing up, putting in the effort, and staying true to your commitments, even when the going gets tough."
“Set your minimum to achieve your maximum.”
I often find myself turning to this phrase when pursuing my goals or when faced with failure. The statement is not about settling for mediocrity. Instead, it’s a testament to carry on and move forward; it’s about acknowledging our humanity, our fallibility, and our need for stability in an ever-changing world. It’s about recognizing that even the smallest victories, the easiest hurdles cleared, can be significant milestones.
So often in life, we’re encouraged to dream big, to reach for the stars, and to set audacious goals. There’s certainly value in setting lofty goals; however, there’s something to be said for being prepared to weather life’s storms with grace and resilience, while continuing to making progress, one small step at a time.
The Dollar by Dollar Savings Rule is not a grand or ambitious savings challenge. Instead, it’s a simple, achievable goal that provides consistent growth no matter what happens; it’s the default option to turn to when failures occur.
Just like life, saving money is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and unexpected challenges that can throw us off course. In these moments, it’s easy to feel discouraged, overwhelmed, and tempted to throw in the towel. It’s in these moments that we need a lifeline to help keep us focused on moving forward to make some kind of progress, even in the face of adversity.
Setting a minimum goal to save at least a dollar a day is about establishing the baseline—the non-negotiable standard that we commit to meeting, no matter what. Setting a minimum allows us to build consistency, discipline, and momentum in our lives.
Moreover, setting a minimum encourages us to take action, to continue even when the odds seem stacked against us. It’s often said that the hardest part of any journey is taking the next step, but by setting a minimum, we give ourselves permission to continue on—to take that leap of faith and trust that the path will improve as we move forward.
"Saving should be a non-negotiable part of our everyday life. It is up to us to create a behavior of financial empowerment—one that prioritizes intention and discipline."
So, how can you get started with the Dollar by Dollar Savings Challenge?
The challenge is straightforward. Commit to saving at least one dollar each day, without fail. Whether you choose to tuck away a dollar bill in a jar or make a weekly transfer to your savings account, the goal remains the same: to continuously improve your savings with a simple and consistent habit.
The beauty of the Dollar by Dollar Savings Challenge lies in its simplicity and accessibility. With a daily minimum goal of just one dollar, it’s a challenge that anyone can participate in, regardless of income or financial situation. And while the focus may be on saving a dollar a day, the true impact lies in the cumulative effect of these small, consistent actions over time.
Saving money, having financial security, and having control over one’s money should not merely be a fantasy for the wealthy. It’s something we can all have with dedication, consistency, and time.
At the worst, with this challenge, you’ll establish a savings habit that will put $365 in your savings account this year. However, this could be start of larger things to come when combined with other savings challenges. From a thousand to a hundred thousand dollars in savings, this could be the single dollar and the habit that starts it all.
