The Non-Perishable Stash Savings Challenge

From shopping spree to savings spree

Challenge Description

When saving up six months’ worth of living expenses feels like climbing a mountain, you have to try something different by sneaking in some savings without feeling the pinch. This savings challenge is not your typical way of saving—it’s going shopping to secretly trick yourself into building up your savings.

Imagine having a stockpile of essential items that keeps you prepared for months, reducing stress and giving you peace of mind. By focusing on building your stash of everyday essentials, this challenge helps you break the daunting task of saving six months’ worth of expenses one shopping trip at a time.

In this challenge, your focus will be on amassing a one to three month supply of essential non-perishable items, encompassing everything from household necessities to personal care products. By adding an additional item or two to your purchases during routine shopping trips and capitalizing on bulk buying opportunities, you’ll slowly trick yourself into saving money.

How it Works

Create Your Essential List: Start by listing all the essential personal care and household items you use daily. Here’s a partial list to help you get you started:

Personal Care Items: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, deodorant, shaving cream, razors, lotion, feminine hygiene products, hair care products (brushes, combs), sunscreen, and etc…

Household Items: trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, fabric softener, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, cleaning supplies (all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner), sponges, light bulbs, batteries, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, storage bags (zipper bags, freezer bags), and etc…

Non-perishable items are ideal for this challenge because they have a long shelf life and won’t spoil. Avoid perishable goods that can expire before use, as they can lead to unnecessary waste and expense.

Purchase: On your regular shopping trips, purchase an addition item or two from your list. For example, if you usually buy one box of trash bags, buy two this time. This simple practice gradually builds your stockpile without a significant immediate expense.

Bulk Purchase: Another effective strategy is buying these items in bulk. Bulk purchases often come at a lower cost per item and ensure you have a long-lasting supply. This approach saves money in the long run and reduces the frequency of shopping trips.

Save Your Receipts: Save each receipt from these shopping trips for the second part of this twelve part savings challenge.

Keep Going: Your ultimate goal for this challenge is to have a one to three-month supply of non-perishable personal care and household items. This means you won’t need to buy these essentials for the next three months, allowing you to allocate those funds towards other savings goals.

Next Steps: After completing the Non-Perishable Stash Savings Challenge, continue building your financial cushion by continuing on to the second part of this challenge series.

While on the surface, The Non-Perishable Stash Savings Challenge may seem like a simple exercise in stockpiling essentials, it’s actually a cleverly disguised savings strategy for a larger goal: saving six months’ worth of living expenses. While it’s just the beginning, this simple start sets you on the path towards financial stability. It’s the perfect way to kickstart your journey toward saving money, one step at a time.
